Young Gareth

William John Hughes (his real name) was born in Dafen, Llanelli, on August 23rd 1894.

His father was a tin-plate worker and a prize winning orator at local Eisteddfodau. He was devoted to his mother and there was one younger brother, Brinley. He loved to perform, staging plays in the pigsty at the bottom of his garden and charging his friends and relatives a pin as entry to the show. He was a gifted child, said by one headmaster to be better read than most of his staff. Although promised as an apprentice to a local chemist, he was enthralled by the Theatre. In 1911, with the blessing of his family, he left for London to seek his fortune on the stage.
